Many Nampa subdivisions have a pressurized irrigation system fed by canals carrying snowmelt from Lucky Peak, Arrowrock and Anderson Ranch reservoirs, delivered through the Nampa & Meridian, Pioneer and Boise-Kuna irrigation districts.

That split changes how a leak gets diagnosed. If your water meter keeps turning with every fixture closed, the leak is on the drinking-water side. If a soggy strip of lawn shows up in May while the meter sits still, suspect the irrigation service line instead.

Ownership matters too. The city maintains the irrigation mains, pump stations and curb stop valve in many subdivisions, but the line from the curb stop to your sprinkler heads is yours. The city will not repair that section, so a leak there is a job for a plumber or irrigation contractor.

The irrigation season typically runs from about mid-April to early October. When it ends, sprinkler lines need to be drained or blown out through your own valve. Homes near the top of that range build scale in tank water heaters and on faucet cartridges, which shortens their service life. A tap test is the cheap first step before deciding on a water softener.
